Boundless Experience

Upon stepping onto it for the first time, you might expect it to creak or at least react audibly. And it would be allowed to do so, for it is over 400 years old. But the Bad Säckingen wooden bridge is much too proud for that. Perched on its six stone pillars it will brave every rush of visitors  – and every storm. The fact that it is the longest roofed wooden bridge in Europe fills the town with pride. And it is also a popular image for photographs among visitors to the city. Not only young pedestrians have their fun standing in two countries at the same time on the white line in the middle of the bridge.

Where else does one have the chance to do so? In honour of the bridge a bridge festival is celebrated on the Minster Square every year. And New Year’s Eve the new year is welcomed on both sides of the banks of the Rhine River. The bridge, the fireworks, the reflections in the Rhine River: Those are most definitely romantic moments.

During the war years supplies were secretly transported across it from Switzerland to Germany; and silent agreements and arrangements were made here. That is how it became what it symbolises today: It unites people, even after hundreds of years.

Enjoy the most beautiful view of the town’s landmark from the Diebsturm (‘Thief’s Tower’). From high above the entire length of the wooden bridge can be admired and through the treetops one can catch a glimpse of the towers of St Fridolin’s Minster.
