Castle Park Romance

The Castle Schönau and its lovingly planted park is an idyllic place to spend time together. At various places on the estate couples have exchanged their wedding vows and taken a first step towards a future life together, just as Franz Werner and his Maria Ursula did. The musical performances in the concert shell in the heart of the park are just as much a part of the romantic atmosphere of the estate as the city wall and the round Diebsturm are. In past times the castle had four towers, however, the two northern ones were lost and a third middle tower on the southside was added.

Various museums can be found inside the castle building, including the Scheffel rooms and the first edition of the ‘Trumpeter of Säckingen’. Of course, a stately statue of the trumpeter at the entrance of the castle is a must. He belongs to the castle just as the surrounding gardens do.

In addition to the Kursaal (‘entertainment hall’), the castle park is regularly used as an unequalled venue for events. During springtime garden and artisan craftwork fairs can be visited here, while in the summer open air cinema, colourful festivals and infectious blues concerts are offered. From May until September the popular, free promenade concerts take place every Sunday morning at which regional musical societies can show off their abilities.

When the music can be heard and the artists are on the stages of the city, you realize what good entertainment feels like.

The Castle Park Café is located right next to the Diebsturm (‘Thief’s Tower’). Enjoying a sundae on the terrace on a warm summer day, the view of the Rhine River, the Diebsturm and the wooden bridge is just unforgettable.
